Normand F. Allen 33°NormandFAllen

Born: December 1, 1862 Died: May 30, 1922.

St. John’s Lodge #4 (now Wyllys-St. John’s Lodge #4). Brother Allen was the “Allen” of Sage, Allen and Co., opening a shop on Main Street in Hartford in 1889 that grew into a chain of department stores. He served as President of Sage, Allen and Co. and was a noted civic leader. Eminent Commander of Washington Commandery #1 in 1897.

St. John’s Lodge #4 (now Wyllys-St. John’s Lodge #4). A mechanical engineer by trade, he worked for Colt Manufacturing and later founded Billings & Spencer, a machine tool company. More information may be found at his Wikipedia entry and at his All-Biographies entry. Presided over all three bodies in the Valley of Hartford. As Thrice Potent Master Billings served more terms (13) than any other Thrice Potent Master, or any presiding officer in any body in the Valley of Hartford at any time. In fact, Ill. Brother Billings served more years as a presiding officer (26) than any other brother, and more than twice as many as Ill. Brother Wheeler, who served 12 terms.

Was crowned an Active Member of the Supreme Council on September 27, 1971, and served as Deputy for Connecticut from September 25, 1975 to September 28, 1978.

Cyrus GoodellCyrusGoodell2

Born: Died:May 28, 1874

Raised in Orient Lodge #62 in East Hartford in 1825, joined St. John’s Lodge #4 in 1838 and was Worshipful Master in 1849. Became a charter member of Hartford Lodge #88 on June 17, 1859. Was Eminent Commander of Washington Commandery #1 in 1852 and Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Connecticut in 1857.

He was “received” (the word then used) into Charter Oak Lodge of Perfection on January 30, 1873.

His funeral was attended by more than 400 Masons. As a man and Mason he was held in high regard, so much so that when the Chapter was chartered it was named in his memory.

St. John’s Lodge #4 (now Wyllys-St. John’s Lodge #4). An insurance agent and graduate of Trinity College, A retired Brigadier General, he was a WWI and WWII veteran. Served as Secretary of the Valley of Hartford from 1961-1970.

Orient Lodge #62 (now part of Columbia #25). Born in the Hockanmum part of East Hartford. Aspired to be a surgeon, but ended up in farming, growing food for market as well as tobacco. He was active in York Rite (Pythagoras Chapter and Wolcott Council) as well as Scottish Rite. Also belonged to the Putnam Phalanx of East Hartford and the East Hartford Grange. Served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Second Congregational Church in East Hartford for 22 years, and was also a Justice of the Peace.

St. John’s Lodge #4 (now Wyllys-St. John’s Lodge #4). Worked as a coal and oil distributor. Served as a Connecticut State Representative 1941-1943, and a c Connecticut State Senator, 1945. Also a member of the Oddfellows and the Exchange Club. Served as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Connecticut 1940.

Served as Most Worshipful Grand Master of Masons in Connecticut.
